A frost-free freezer does not avoid frost, it manages it. The evaporator coil naturally collects ice as it pulls moisture from the air, and a defrost cycle runs several times a day to melt that ice away before it accumulates. When frost keeps building, either the defrost cycle has stopped clearing it or too much moist air is getting in for the cycle to keep up. The location and pace of the frost tells us which.

What Is Usually Happening

Failed defrost heater. The heater that melts coil ice during each defrost cycle can burn out, letting frost accumulate into a solid block on the evaporator.
