A refrigerator makes cold in one place and carries it to another. The compressor and condenser push heat out of the cabinet, the evaporator pulls heat out of the air inside, and fans move that cold air to where it belongs. When the box runs warm, one link in that chain has failed. The single most useful clue is whether the freezer is still frozen: if it is, the trouble is usually airflow or defrost, not the sealed system.
What Is Usually Happening
- Fouled condenser coil. A coil buried in dust and pet hair cannot reject heat, so the compressor labors and cooling drifts up. It is the most common and least costly cause, and it shows up first in warm weather.
- Dead evaporator fan. When the fan that lifts cold air from the freezer into the fridge quits, the freezer stays cold while the fresh-food side climbs.
- Stalled defrost cycle. A failed defrost heater, sensor, or control lets the evaporator ice into a solid block. Air can no longer pass it, and cooling collapses even while the compressor runs.
- Stuck air damper. The damper that meters cold air into the fresh-food compartment can jam shut, starving the fridge while the freezer stays fine.
- Sensor or control-board fault. A drifting thermistor or a bad main board can stop the unit from calling for cooling at the right moment.
- Sealed-system leak. A refrigerant leak or a failing compressor warms the whole cabinet slowly. This needs appropriately qualified recovery and repair, which an appropriately qualified professional must perform.
Notes by Brand
The four-cause map holds on every refrigerator, but the parts and the way faults surface differ by make. Here is how it tends to read across the roster we service around Johns Creek.
- Sub-Zero. Built-in and integrated columns hold service codes the control reads out in a diagnostic mode. On dual-refrigeration models, where each section has its own evaporator, a frosted coil from a stalled defrost or a failing evaporator fan is common.
- Wolf. Wolf is a cooking brand, so a not-cooling call on a Wolf kitchen almost always means a companion Sub-Zero or Cove unit. We handle the refrigeration on the diagnostic.
- Thermador and Bosch. These BSH refrigerators often post an E-series or numeric code and can flag a fan or defrost fault outright, which shortens the diagnosis.
- Viking and Monogram. Single-compressor built-ins where a dirty condenser, a tired evaporator fan, and a stalled defrost are the usual suspects.
- Miele and Liebherr. European integrated units whose electronic control and door-seal condition strongly affect cooling. Liebherr logs E0, E1, and E2 alarms we read on arrival.
- Gaggenau and True Residential. Column refrigeration diagnosed by code and by the same condenser, fan, damper, and sealed-system checks that apply across every brand.
| Symptom | Likely Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Freezer cold, fridge warm | Evaporator fan or stalled defrost | Test fan motor, defrost heater and sensor, clear the iced coil |
| Whole cabinet slowly warming, compressor runs nonstop | Fouled condenser or sealed-system leak | Clean condenser; if refrigerant is low, appropriately qualified leak repair |
| Fridge warm, no air at the vents | Stuck air damper | Free or replace the damper assembly |
| Readings wrong, compressor cycles oddly | Thermistor or control board | Test sensors, verify control logic, replace the faulty part |
| Compressor silent, no cooling at all | Compressor, start relay, or control | Test relay and windings, quote sealed-system repair |
Food safety matters more than the appliance. If the cabinet has climbed above 40 degrees, move perishables into a cooler with ice, keep the doors closed, and book the earliest window. The safe-food window is only a few hours once cooling stops, so a warm box full of food should be treated as appointment.
What We Do on the Visit
We confirm the real cabinet temperature with a probe rather than trusting the display, then walk the chain in order: condenser condition, evaporator fan, defrost components, damper, sensors, and finally the sealed system. If refrigerant is involved, we recover and recharge in accordance with applicable requirements. You get a named cause and a written price before any repair, all backed by a 180-day repair warranty. Written terms are provided with the repair.
